“…what matters in life is not whether we receive a round of applause; what matters is whether we have the courage to venture forth despite the uncertainty of acclaim.”–Amor Towles, A Gentleman in Moscow
I absolutely adore this book. Amor Towles’ debut novel introduces the reader to an unforgettable group of characters and explores how one finds meaning after great loss. Count Alexander Rostov finds purpose, friendship, humor, and love despite being detained in the Metropol Hotel for the rest of his life. An aristocrat by birth, Rostov escapes the fate of most of his peers since he is the credited author of a much loved poem celebrating the revolution. There is no place for him in the new Russia, however, so he sentenced to living the rest of his days in the Metropol Hotel. He soon discovers that his continued existence at the Metropol will be nothing like the years he spent living there before. In addition to not being able to set foot outside the hotel, he no longer lives in a beautiful suite, filled with his possessions. His new home is a small, cold attic apartment where he is allowed to keep only a very few of his belongings. Rostov must adapt to his new reality and there are times when his grief, loneliness, and despair threaten to overcome him.
This book is fascinating, from the details of life in Russia under Lenin and Stalin to Rostov’s friendship and adventures with his young friend, Nina. It celebrates friendship, loyalty, grace, and love. It is easily one of my favorite books.
