“There are many distractions in life, and even though many of them are worthwhile, they don’t truly matter. The only thing that binds us together is family.”–Laura Beers, A Treacherous Engagement

Miss Dinah Ashmore’s sister has gone missing and the constable will not take her concerns seriously. Out of options, Dinah decides to hire a Bow Street Runner to look for her sister, not realizing the danger she is putting herself into. She approaches Nathaniel Calvert, Earl of Hawthorne, about taking her case, not realizing that although he dressed similarly to a runner, he does not work for Bow Street. He actually works for the Crown as a spy and he listens to Dinah’s story, he realizes her sister’s disappearance may be related to his case. He agrees to take the case and lets Dinah continue to believe he is a runner. Dinah is not content to just let him work on the case and continually inserts herself into the investigation. When her actions cause her life to be threatened, Nathaniel must keep her safe and ignore the growing the attraction between them. And if they are successful in finding her sister, Dinah may never forgive him for not telling her truth earlier.

This is the first of six books in The Gentlemen of London series which all revolve around agents for the Crown and the women that come into their lives. Regency spies, adventure, are a winning combination in A Treacherous Engagement. I enjoyed this book and the series by Laura Beers.
