“Women were more than placeholders for the men. Women were active war agents. Through their brainwork, the women had an impact on the fighting that went on. This is an important truth, and it is one that often has been overlooked.”–Liza Mundy, Code Girls: The Untold Story of the American Women Code Breakers of WWII

Most people are familiar with the code breaking work done at Bletchley Park in England during WWII, but few are aware of the work done in the United States and the role women played as code breakers. There were 10,000 intelligent, hardworking, and dedicated women who relocated to Washington to learn the craft of code breaking. Their work saved countless lives and shortened the length of the war. Liza Mundy’s careful research shares the stories of these women, who because of the classified nature of their work, were not able to tell their families for decades of the work they did during the war. Thank you, Liza Mundy, for paying homage to these amazing women.
