“Now, it is a verifiable actuality that any two men can talk politely and even become friends, given the chance; but put them in different uniforms, or train them in the use of different tools or philosophies or shaving soap, and you will have two men who are sure that the other lives primarily to contradict him. I did know a fellow once who insisted that reasonable men can disagree, but somebody knocked him cold with a cast-iron frying pan just then and I never did hear the remainder of his hypothesis.”― Van Reid, Cordelia Underwood: Or, The Marvelous Beginnings of the Moosepath League
This delightful book by Van Reid is set in 1896 along the Maine coast and is filled with a cast of colorful characters. When the young and beautiful Cordelia Underwood inherits land from her uncle, she starts down a path of adventure, romance, and danger. She is aided by Mr. Watson and his three hapless friends who call themselves the Moosepath League. Cordelia will need all the help she can get to thwart the villains and secure her inheritance. This is a fun and rollicking adventure complete with old family secrets, new friends, and good humor.
Van Reid has created a story that reminds of some Charles Dickens’ more light hearted novels. This is the perfect book to read while lounging at the beach or relaxing at the end of a long day. In an end note, Reid described his book as a “world of decency and kindness, goodness and laughter,” That is my kind of world! I dare you not to be charmed by Cordelia and the Moosepath League.
