What do you do when your entire world is upended? That is the question for Walter Atherton, Viscount Birtwell. As the eldest son of an earl, he has never needed to worry about his future and his engagement to a wealthy heiress guarantees his life of ease. But when the family chaplain is found murdered, a dreadful secret is uncovered that takes away Arthur’s title, his fiancé, and his world as he knows it.

Miss Winifred Strong has loved Walter for years but as the daughter of a mere baronet, she knows she has no hope of marrying the heir to the earldom. As Walter is cast out of society, Winifred begins to hope that maybe he will turn to her, his old friend once again. A surprise stay in London brings another young man into the picture and Winifred realizes she may not need to remain a spinster forever if Walter does not return her love.

I am a fan of Mary Kingswood. She had written several Regency series and they are all well written with engaging stories and memorable, well drawn characters. This book is no exception. This is the first of five books in The Chaplain’s Legacy series and the premise of this first book and the series is an intriguing one. If you like mystery and romance, look no further.
