“The Frenchman may fight for France, but the American fights for mankind, for freedom; for the people, not the land.”–Killer Angels
Killer Angels won the 1975 Pulitzer for its re-creation of the Battle of Gettysburg and the insight of what the war was really about and what it meant. It was also the inspiration behind the film “Gettysburg.” I was really moved when I read this book as Michael Shaara brought the battle and the individuals involved to life. I visited Gettysburg several years after reading this book and I was overcome by the feeling of sacredness there. If you haven’t been to Gettysburg, I highly recommend going and in the mean time, be sure to read Killer Angels.
