“You know, Son, sometimes a fellow has to take a licking for doing the right thing. A licking only lasts a short while, even if it’s a hard one, but failing to do the right thing will often make a mark on a man that will last forever.” ― Ralph Moody, Father and I Were Ranchers

When I first heard of this book many years ago, it was described to me as Little House on the Prairie for boys. That is a pretty accurate description. It is the true story of Ralph Moody and his family. Ralph was eight years old in 1906 when his family moved from New Hampshire to a ranch in Colorado. He shares many stories from auctions and round ups to family outings, and irrigation wars. This is a wonderful and authentic look back at that time and what life on a ranch was like. It was not easy. Some of the stories are whimsical and light hearted while others are much more serious and sad–pretty much a description of life. This is just the first of eight books in the Little Britches series that detail the adventures of Moody and his family.
