“They were orphans of war, washed up on that little island in a tide of blood.”–Ransom Riggs, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children

Jacob thinks he’s just your average, run of the mill teenager in Florida until a family tragedy sends him to a mysterious island in Wales where he learns that nothing in his life, including himself, is normal anymore. On the island, he comes across the crumbling remains of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. During his exploration of the ruins, he discovers that the children who lived there were more than peculiar. They may have been dangerous and even more disturbing, they may still be alive, in opposition to the laws of time. Jacob will never be the same after his visit to the island and after being part of two different worlds, must choose between the two.

This is an action packed story with villains, chases, supernatural forces, and lots of teen-aged angst. If you thought being a teenager was rough, imagine being one for decades! Ransom Riggs delivers a unique, page turning story complete with strange historical photographs. The audio book is well done but you miss out on the photographs which add to the story. The photographs are included in the e-reader editions of the book. This is book one in the series, so if you want to continue the story, check out the remaining books in the Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children series
