“It’s my belief that anyone worth knowing enjoys spending time in a bookshop.”–Oliver Darkshire, Once Upon a Tome: The Misadventures of a Rare Bookseller
This gem of a book is one that I just happened across in a moment of serendipity. I was searching for a different book on Libby and this book showed up in my search, just a few months after it was released. I knew nothing about it, but as a book lover, there was no way I could resist the title!
Once Upon a Tome is set in of one of the world’s oldest bookshops. As Oliver Darkshire begins working at Henry Sotheran Ltd., founded in 1761, he learns about its history and what it means to be a modern day antiquarian book shop. He brings the reader into a world most of us are unfamiliar with and shares many humorous and colorful accounts as he shares what happens daily behind the scenes at the bookshop. He also has a wicked sense of humor as illustrated by this quote, ““Hell hath no fury, they say, like a man treated the same way as he treats women.”
This is a unique and different book but if you love bookstores, Once Upon a Tome is a book you should take a look at.
