“There you go…let it all slide out. Unhappiness can’t stick in a person’s soul when it’s slick with tears.”–Shannon Hale, Princess Academy

Shannon Hale is a master storyteller and Princess Academy is no exception. Miri lives on a mountain where her people have lived simply for generations. That all changes when word arrives from the king’s priests that her village is the home of the future princess. An academy will be set up where the girls from the village will study for a year in hopes of being chosen as the prince’s bride. Despite the excitement about gaining an education, all is not wonderful for Miri. She has a difficult academy mistress, the village girls are engaged in bitter competition, and Miri doesn’t know any more what she wants out of life. If she is chosen as princess, she will have to leave her beloved family and mountain behind.

This is a story that will appeal to readers of all ages. Miri is a wonderful heroine and the story is engaging. I just this book immensely as well as the two other books in the series, Princess Academy: Palace of Stone and Princess Academy: The Forgotten Sisters
