“What do you want to be when you grow up?” asked the mole.
“Kind,” said the boy.–Charlie Mackesy, The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse
I adore this book. I read it for the first time not long after it was published in 2019. It is the story of a curious boy, a greedy mole, a wary fox, and a wise horse that form an unlikely friendship as they embark on an adventure together and discover kindness, friendship, hope, and love. It has beautiful illustrations and few words, but the words that are used are powerful.
In 2020, this was a difficult book to find as it was usually on backorder because of the pandemic–not because of supply chain issues, but because book sellers couldn’t keep it in stock. Many needed a message of hope and inspiration during those dark days and this book provided it. This is another book that I have gifted to many people. Its message is universal and filled with warmth and acceptance.
This book is a treasure and is perfect for people of all ages.
