“All human wisdom is contained in these two words – Wait and Hope”― Alexandre Dumas, The Count of Monte Cristo
This may be the favorite book of all three of my sons. I’m not sure how many times they’ve each read it, but it’s a lot! Alexandre Dumas’ classic tale of wrongful imprisonment and retribution is a page turner that reels that the reader in and doesn’t let you go until the final page. Edmond Dantes is thrown into the notorious fortress of If for a crime he did not commit. on the day that Napoleon escaped from the island of Elba. While imprisoned, he learns of a great treasure hidden on the island of Monte Cristo and determines to not only escape, but to find the treasure and use it to destroy the three men responsible for his imprisonment. It is a complex story with a large cast of characters and so much going on, it’s no wonder it clocks in at over 1200 pages! Don’t be intimidated by the length– it is a gripping tale, inspired by a real life case of wrongful imprisonment, that has become one of the great literary classics.
