“If you make happy those that are near, those that are far will come.”― Grace Lin, Where the Mountain Meets the Moon
This is a wonderful book by author Grace Lin that is a companion to her earlier books, Starry River of the Sky and When the Sea Turned to Silver. Each of these books is based on Chinese folk tales and have beautiful illustrations. In this book, a young girl named Minli lives with her parents in a shack in the valley of the Fruitless Mountain. Her father entertains her in the evenings by telling stories of the Jade Dragon and the Old Man in the Moon. Minli’s family is in trouble so she sets off on an adventure to find the Old Man in the Moon and ask him how she can help her family. Along the way, she meets all kinds of colorful characters, including a dragon who comes with her on her quest. This is a delightful story that will be appreciated by anyone who likes a good adventure and the magnificent full color illustrations are an added bonus.
