“Reason is how we get to the truth, but imagination is how we find meaning.”― Patti Callahan, Once Upon a Wardrobe
Once Upon a Wardrobe is a gift to anyone who loves stories and their life changing magic. Patti Callahan has crafted a beautiful historical novel that combines fact with fiction to shed light on the impact books and stories have on our lives and it is a must read for anyone who loves Narnia.
It is 1950 and seventeen year Margaret (Megs) is a student of mathematics and physics at Oxford. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe has recently been published and children everywhere are enthralled with the story One of these children is Meg’s eight year old brother, George. George is homebound because of illness and spends much of his day reading about and thinking of Narnia. When he asks Meg if Narnia is real, she tells him in no uncertain terms that it just a book for children and it is not real. George then asks Meg to approach the famous author and Oxford professor, Mr. Lewis and ask him the question he must know the answer to: Where did Narnia come from? Meg is nervous about approaching Mr. Lewis but somehow finds herself taking tea with him and his brother. Rather than answer her question, Mr. Lewis shares stories from his own life over the course of many weeks and encourages Meg to form her own conclusion. Meg shares these stories with George and as his imagination takes flight, Meg learns that reason can only go so far and that, “The way stories change us can’t be explained. It can only be felt. Like love.“
This is a beautiful story that will warm your heart and remind you of the power of imagination and stories.
