Out of My Mind

“It’s like I live in a cage with no door and no key. And I have no way to tell someone how to get me out.”–Sharon M. Draper, Out of My Mind

This terrific book that is a must read for all parents and children. Melody is eleven years old and is not at all like the other kids her age. She can’t walk. She can’t talk. She can’t write. Her cerebral palsy makes communication impossible. Melody is also different because she has a photographic memory. She remembers everything she has ever experienced. She is the smartest kid in the school, but everyone, including her teachers and doctors, thinks she is mentally challenged. She is incredibly frustrated by her inability to communicate and that she is treated as if she can’t understand anything. There has got to be a way for her to let people know what she is thinking–she just has to figure it out.

Sharon Draper’s story is engaging, moving, and packs a punch. Melody is a fantastic character and her story continues in the other two books in the Out of My Mind series
